I profile 25 books I’ve sold for $100 or more, and share lessons on why each one was valuable. Welcome to a massive guide to how to spot profitable books to resell.
The article so long, I turned it into a book
The original idea for this article was to profile 100 books I’ve personally sold for $100 or more. So I curated a long list, wrote the entire article, and typed out all the lessons over many days. And it was then I came to one realization:
No one is going to read an article this long.
So I did something I haven’t done before: I split this into two parts:
- 25 books I’ve sold for $100+ (this article).
- 100 books I’ve sold for $100 (I took the unedited article and put it into a 100+ page ebook).

What you’re about to learn
- $100+ Sales From My Personal Account: I profile 25 books that sold for huge profits – and explain why they were profitable.
- A Guide To Seeing Profitable Inventory: For each book, you get an actionable lesson on what made the book profitable, so you can learn to spot profit when sourcing.
- Why I consider this the “Missing Link”: The ability to hone in on that 0.01% of profitable books and filter out the 99.9% of unprofitable books is a major factor that separates successful sellers from the unsuccessful. That’s what this guide is about.
Why the value of books is not random
With books, value is driven by principles. That’s what this guide will teach you: What patterns to look for to efficiently spot profitable books.
High value books are not random. There are reasons they are high value. And when you can spot these “drivers of value” in a split second, hone in on titles like these, and filter out the 99.99% of books that sell for under $20, you have a massive advantage as a bookseller.
Because you can rarely scan everything…
What this guide is, and what it is not
Let me explain what this guide will do for you by first establishing what this book is not.
It is not a list of 100 books that you should be on the hunt for. There’s over 40 million books on Amazon. The chance you’ll encounter any 25 books included here (or the 100 in the ebook) at any point in your life is close to zero. That’s not the point of this guide.
What this guide does provide is 100 hand-selected books that offer lessons and clues about what types of books tend to be valuable. As I call these clues “the principles of book value.”
For each book here, I offer a sentence or two about why it sold for $100. This is the most important part of this guide – the lessons on why some books hold their value (and most don’t).
I lied: These books have sold for $99 or more
One correction: This isn’t 25 books sold for $100 or more. It’s 100 books I sold for $99 or more. The “25 books sold for $100” title sounds better than “25 books sold for $99.” If I can sell a book for $100, I usually just list at $99.99 (or thereabouts). So I’ve sold a ton of books around the $99 mark.
Lowering the threshold to $99 increases the range of options to include in this guide dramatically. (I trust you won’t sue me for false advertising).
How I compiled this list of profitable books
To start, I went into my personal Amazon account and sorted all sold listings from highest price to lowest. But it wasn’t as simple as copying the top 100 results.
First, it turns out that sometime around 2016 I had gotten spooked by all the reports of Amazon sellers getting their account shut down for inactive listings that were now restricted (or something like that, I forget what the panic was about). So I went through and deleted most of my completed listings from that era, starting with the most expensive. This became a regrettable decision as I began compiling this guide, with so many of my high value sales lost forever to an ancient digital dumpster.
But there was still no shortage of $99+ books to distill down to a “best of.” So I went through the spreadsheet and curated the 100 books that offered the best lessons.
What remained is 100 books, each with a valuable lesson on why it was valuable. Lessons you can take and apply to your book sourcing missions.
So are these 100 books you can sell for $100 right now?
Let me quickly address the obvious: Prices fluctuate on Amazon. A lot. Some of the books here that sold for $200 in 2015 are selling for $10 now. That’s how Amazon works. Demand for certain books drops. Supply goes up. Etc. That’s how all marketplaces work. Over time, prices of books trend downwards. This happens as books age, and competition increases.
A list of books selling for $100 now would be obsolete in a week. That’s not what this guide is. Study the patterns, not the specific prices of specific titles.
Notes to better understand this guide
Some of these sold for a premium because they sold in New condition. When a book sold for $99+ in New condition, I tried to catch it and make note. But I’m sure I missed some.
A disproportionate percentage of these books sold for $99.99. There’s a reason for that: $99.99 is my default price when I’m the only seller of a book. About 30% of the books in this guide sold for that amount, not due to random coincidence, but because that’s how I price a book when the competition is very low or non-existent.
These are in random order (sort of ). Actually it’s not exactly random. You’ll see many books in a row that have selling prices in ascending order, followed by a run of prices in descending order, followed by 10 books that sold for $99.99, etc. It just depends on how I sorted the spreadsheet that day on the many days I worked on this project.
Your homework (an exercise in spotting profitable books)
Maximizing value from this document is simple:
- Look at each book.
- Ask “Why did this sell for $99 or more?”
- Read the lessons below each book.
By the end, you will have a well-rounded look at these “principles of book value.”
Value is not random. It is driven by factors that can be learned. That’s what this guide is about.

A point already made (and will be made again before this guide is over): Books on narrow subjects related to music are frequently high-value.
Book #6
Title: Investigating Astronomy: A Conceptual View of the Universe

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.97
- ASIN: 142921063X
What can we learn from this sale?
I’m always on the lookout for books on niche science subjects. These have high value a disproportionate amount of the time.
Book #7
Title: The Mott Metal-Insulator Transition: Models and Methods

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.98
- ASIN: 3540614818
What can we learn from this sale?
Similar to the last book, here’s another science book that is so niche, there’s probably no other book in the world on this exact subject. Low supply = high value.
Book #8
Title: Alpha Omega Entropy Philosophy in Abstract Art

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.95
- ASIN: B00416SAJ2
What can we learn from this sale?
As a rule of thumb: If a title is so confusing that you can’t understand what the book is about, that means it’s valuable a large percentage of the time.
Book #9
Title: OSHA Compliance Guide For Medical Employers

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.99
- ASIN: 0735546959
What can we learn from this sale?
Another one of my favorite categories of books to look for are books that are published specifically for businesses. As you can imagine, businesses can spend more than the average retail customer.
Book #10
Title: 108 Proven Split Test Winners

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.99
- ASIN: B00K71W40G
What can we learn from this sale?
Similar to the last book, this is a title specifically for internet marketers and is only available to purchase from the author directly. I created the product page for this myself after noticing the author had not done so. I proceeded to sell many copies of this for $100 after purchasing from the author’s site for $8.
Book #11
Title: Proceedings of the Third International Kant Congress

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.99
- ASIN: B004SHZYVQ
What can we learn from this sale?
Anything with an extremely small academic audience is something I’m going to give attention to when book sourcing. “Scholarly non-fiction” is your mantra when looking for valuable books.
Book #12
Title: Practical Lock Picking: A Physical Penetration Tester’s Training Guide

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.95
- ASIN: 01597496111
What can we learn from this sale?
Any “how to” book on criminal activity should be considered to have high value unless proven otherwise. And while lock-picking isn’t explicitly criminal, it appeals to a “hacker” audience, and the same principles apply.
Book #13
Title: Telecommunications Venture Capital Best Practices

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.99
- ASIN: 159622827X
What can we learn from this sale?
Always look for books that appeal only to people with lots of money. In this case: Venture capitalists. They don’t care as much about what they have to pay.
Book #14
Title: 1001 Things You Must Do Before You Die – Box Set

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.98
- ASIN: B000ZV0LLC
What can we learn from this sale?
I don’t fully understand why this set sold for as much as it did. As far as I can tell, these books are available separately for less than the box set. Most likely, they are paying for the set + box, which was out of print. Lesson: Box sets = money.
Book #15
Title: A Legacy of Nursing Education At Montana State University

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.99
- ASIN: B011BNJ9BU
What can we learn from this sale?
It’s somewhat counterintuitive, but the smaller the audience for a book, the more likely it is to be worth money. Hard to get smaller than a book on the nursing department of a small state school.
Book #16
Title: The Story of Rama, Part I

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.99
- ASIN: B00DLEBKEW
What can we learn from this sale?
Fringe religious titles (particularly eastern religion) are a very strong category. I’m always looking up any eastern religion book that appears to be published by a small publisher.
Book #17
Title: Postal Service Labor Arbitrations

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.99
- ASIN: 1604021411
What can we learn from this sale?
Bottom line: Books command high prices when there is no other title on earth that covers the exact subject. I’m confident there is no substitute for this book, and that’s why it commanded such a high price.
Book #18
Title: Tony Robbins: The New Money Masters (CD box set)

- Sold on Amazon For: $499
- ASIN: B004JKYS1O
What can we learn from this sale?
This is the first audiobook of this guide, but it won’t be the last. Audiobooks can mean serious money – especially if they’re about business.
Book #19
Title: Fashion’s Favourite: The Cotton Trade and the Consumer

- Sold on Amazon For: $264.36
- ASIN: 0199210624
What can we learn from this sale?
The riches really are in the niches.
Book #20
Title: Greenberg’s Guide to Lionel Trains 1901-1942

- Sold on Amazon For: $299.95
- ASIN: 0897783948
What can we learn from this sale?
High book values are primarily driven by “irrationally passionate” customers. And few audiences are more passionate (and irrational) than collectors. In this case: Model train collectors.
Book #20
Title: The Taking Of America

- Sold on Amazon For: $352.99
- ASIN: B0006XRO3W
What can we learn from this sale?
This title was found among the collection of Osama Bin Laden when the US raided his compound. An example of a book that can have significant value not because of its specific content, but because of it’s mythology or historical significance.
Book #21
Title: The Loan Officer’s Roadmap to $1 Million (CD box set)

- Sold on Amazon For: $99.99
- ASIN: B01A56XG36
What can we learn from this sale?
A high-end audio book on how to make millions in a niche field. What else do you need to know? Of course this is worth serious money.
Book #22
Title: Greatness

- Sold on Amazon For: $145
- ASIN: 0981805124
What can we learn from this sale?
Increasingly, you’re seeing people with social media platforms publish limited run books and selling them for high prices. This is a recent example. I was fortunate to find a used copy shortly after it was published.
Book #23
Title: Sap R/3 Black Book

- Sold on Amazon For: $143.95
- ASIN: 8177226819
What can we learn from this sale?
We haven’t even talked about computer books yet. Generally, these are high-value for the first one or two years after they’re released, then plummet in value. But when they’re valuable, they can be very valuable. (This same book is selling for $8 now.)
Book #24
Title: Letters to Gabriel: The True Story of Gabriel Michael Santorum

- Sold on Amazon For: $125
- ASIN: 1568145284
What can we learn from this sale?
The story of this book selling for this amount comes with a lesson: Santorum was running for president went this book was sold. My unfounded theory is that his campaign was buying up every copy because there was some compromising content that jeapordized his reputation. Sometimes high values are driven by media attention or other timely forces that fade quickly (this book sells for $12 now).
Book #25
Title: Unintended Consequences

- Sold on Amazon For: $399.99
- ASIN: 1888118040
What can we learn from this sale?
This is one of the only fiction books I’ve sold for $100+. This book is a libertarian-themed novel. Unclear why it commands such a high selling price, but the lesson is: Fiction can be profitable, but it’s rarely really profitable.
How to use these lessons to boost your Amazon book profits
You have the option of being the Amazon seller who scans literally everything when they’re book sourcing. But I don’t recommend it.
If you want to develop your book sourcing “third eye,” start to apply the principles from this guide when you’re out hunting for inventory.
For every book in front of you, start to learn to calculate (in a fraction of the a second):
Do any of the principles of value apply?
- If yes, scan it.
- If no, pass.
Sounds like voodoo, but this is a skill you can develop. And it will increase your sourcing efficiency massively.
