Among a lot of other sources, I get some inventory from thrift stores. One reason I’ve been so successful is that I appear to have no competition for used media in this city. I’ve only seen one or two signs that there are others out there shopping at my spots, but they aren’t very good, and they haven’t kept me from making nearly six-figures last year.
Today, I encountered my first real-life sighting of someone with a barcode scanner shopping for books. Admittedly, I was a little intimidated at first. I held back and spied on the man (he also had a friend) from behind the VHS shelf. It took me about 30 seconds to realize this man was no threat to me. His friend asked him what to look for so he could help, and the man replied:
“Look for the books with the highest cover price.”
Seriously, this guy thought there was ANY relationship between the cover price of a book, and it’s worth. Hey: I’m pretty sure John Grisham hardcovers sell for $24.95 new. Try selling one of those.
